Ask and you shall receive...HELP!

Hello friends!

Yesterday I was perusing Pinterest and saw this.
Not for the food, but the dish! I need!
I was not interested in the recipe but in that silver dish!!
I have seen them around from time to time but they never had the glass part.
I figured that it was a specialty item and only fit a certain dish.
But after I saw this picture, I thought duh!
They fit the regular dishes we all have. I really wanted one!

So today I went to Sherwood, AR for a special trip.
(That I will blog about soon. I am SO excited to share this with you!!)
On the way home I saw a Goodwill. You know I stopped by.

And lo and behold...

$1.50!
Ok yes, they are in HORRIBLE shape.
But I figured I could ask all of you, my bloggy friends,
for advice on how to bring them back to their former, glorious selves.

So here is what I am working with...

How do I get them back to this shape???

HELP!

  1. Have you tried silver polish yet? I'd do that first....

  2. I don't know the best way to revive your dishes (great find, there!), but I have wondered what part of AR you are in, and I was delighted to know you are near Sherwood (or at least not too far). I am originally from Conway County. It is always nice to know something about the area where the bloggers are writing from, and it is great to know that you are near my hometown!

  3. Hello
I work in an opshop (thrift store) and I often bring home silver to restore.
First I line a plastic or glass container big enough to hold the item with tin foil.
Throw a couple of good tablespoons of washing soda in there and then add enough hot water to cover your silverware .
Drop your silverware in and let it have a beauty spa. You can use a soft brush to rub away at stubborn bits. Now the trick here is this is a chemical reaction thing. You may need to repeat a couple of times to get the best result.
Things should be starting to look better but still like they need a jolly good polish.
I then use a product called Autosol. This is made in Germany - I get mine from an auto shop. You can get this as a paste in a tube

  4. ....but wait there's more! Or as a liquid in a bottle. I prefer the liquid for silver. Polish with this Nd finish with a silver polish if you wish. It looks to me like the legs of your pieces may not be silver plated and may not polish. Still it's worth a try.
    Good luck!

  6. I would try silver cleaner first. See how far that takes you. I'm sure they'll be beautiful when you're done with them. Thanks for sharing at DIybyDesign.

  10. I would assume they are plated silver... that can make a difference as to how to clean them up. I have had success with adding baking soda to boiling water. The boiling water has an aluminum foil ball in it. Dip the silver into the boiling water and then wipe with a soft cloth. I found you on Mingle With Us!

  15. razzle dazzle quilter is right, i tried that one but with aluminium foil and it works great with my table silver.

To make it really shine, you can use a silver polish or silver polish cloth.
When the silver is just a layer, (and it isnt massive) dont polish to often cause you will polish the layer off eventually (after many times). Thats why the soda trick is better.

  16. What a great find. Curious to see what works for you, as I have no clue how to clean silver! Thanks so much for linking up to our Pretty Things Party! I hope you'll be back next week!

  17. Quick and fast: tomato sauce or ketchup. rub on item. add salt. polish away.

The way I most often do it is with Wright's Silver Polish.

Unfortunately, I've found quite a few that need dishes that are not a standard size.

  18. I would hesitate to even mention this, but "if" all ways of polishing the silver and shining it fail, then you "could" spray paint it in a gorgeous color to go with your dishes and decor.
